Combolands on Steam Deck: Playable, Not Verified
What players who own a Deck actually say
Two first-hand reports from the Steam discussion thread asking whether anyone plays it on Deck:
- "It's not ideal, but playable on steamdeck. Worst thing is that the game needs to be stretched to fill the SD's screen, which makes text a bit blurry though still readable."
- A player with roughly 12 Deck runs and 3 PC runs behind them names the specific offenders: the Reroll, Destruction and Dismiss counters on the right of the screen, and the councillor quest text in the centre when the three quests appear — which are unlocked through neutral permanent progression. Their verdict: "overall the text is readable".
Neither reports crashes, frame-rate problems or input trouble. The store page also lists a Mouse Only Option and tags the game as playable without timed input, which is consistent with a game whose Deck problem is legibility rather than control.
Why it is not Verified yet
This is the rare case where the developers have said exactly what the blocker is. In their 2026-08-28 roadmap post, Crux Games wrote that many players want to play on Deck or with a controller, that they think it is "a really good fit for the deck", and that they hit issues with it before launch. Then the practical obstacle: neither developer owns a Steam Deck, and Decks are not sold in South Africa, where the studio is based — so step one is physically getting hold of one. The issue they name as most-raised is text legibility, matching the player reports exactly.
They also state plainly that they cannot give a timeline, and that the two-person studio went back to part-time work the week after launch.
What that means if you are deciding now
- It will run. The system requirements are modest — 8 GB RAM, a GTX 1060-class GPU, and a 1 GB install — and this is a pixel-art game with no video assets.
- Expect to squint at three numbers. The counters and the council quest text are the known sore points, not the map itself.
- There is no demo to test with. The free demo was pulled around launch, so trying before buying is not currently an option.
- A fix is committed but undated. Verification is priority two on a roadmap that explicitly refuses to give dates.
